WRITTEN RECEPTION (100 points)
(ACCESS TO INFORMATION FROM WRITTEN TEXTS)

Read the text below and then answer questions 1-10.
The words marked with a star (*) are explained below the text.

THE YOUNG INVENTOR

I   When people hear the word "inventor*", they usually think of old scientists in white coats who work in big laboratories*. But good ideas do not come only from famous scientists. Every year, thousands of school children invent useful things. Judges at science competitions say that children often notice small, everyday problems that busy adults do not see.

II   Oscar Hughes, a thirteen-year-old boy from Leeds, England, is one of these young inventors. His grandfather, George, lives with Oscar's family. George often forgot where he put his keys and his glasses, and every morning he looked for them all over the house. "One day, Grandpa missed his bus to the doctor because he could not find his keys," says Oscar. "He was very sad. So I decided to build a machine that finds lost things."

III   Oscar's invention is called the Finder, and it has two parts. One part is a small orange button that you stick on your keys or your glasses. The other part is a remote control that hangs on the kitchen wall. When you press the remote control, the button makes a loud sound and a little light flashes, so you can find the lost thing in seconds. Oscar built the first Finder in his bedroom, from parts of an old radio and a broken alarm clock.

IV   At first, Oscar's friends laughed at his strange machine. But when he brought the Finder to his school's science fair, everyone wanted to try it. Last year, Oscar won first prize* in a national competition for young inventors in London. After the competition, a small factory in Leeds started to make Finders, and more than two thousand people have already bought one. "Making the first Finder was easy," Oscar explains. "The real work was making it small, simple and cheap, so that everyone can use it."

V   Today, Oscar visits schools and tells other children about his work. "You do not need a big laboratory to be an inventor," he tells them. "You only need to look at the people around you and ask what they need. My best idea came from helping my grandfather." Oscar is planning his next invention, and he hopes that one day every child will try to invent something that helps others.

What do we learn from paragraph I?
Model answer · תשובה The route · הדרך: This is a main idea question about one paragraph, so read paragraph I to the end before you choose. It opens with what people usually think about inventors and then turns on the word But: from there the paragraph is about good ideas that come from school children. Now test the options against the paragraph itself: it names famous scientists but never says how they become famous, it mentions judges at science competitions but says nothing about adults disliking them, and "thousands of school children invent useful things" counts inventors, not winners.
iii. Paragraph I says: "Every year, thousands of school children invent useful things." Good ideas "do not come only from famous scientists". None of the other options appears in paragraph I.

Why did Grandpa miss his bus to the doctor? (paragraph II)

ANSWER:   .

Model answer · תשובה The route · הדרך: This is a "why" detail question, and the reason is written in the text with the word because. The question's miss his bus to the doctor appears in the text as missed his bus to the doctor, inside Oscar's quotation in paragraph II, so find that sentence and take what comes after because. The text already speaks about Grandpa as he, so you can keep its words as they are.
Because he could not find his keys. Check: "One day, Grandpa missed his bus to the doctor because he could not find his keys," says Oscar.
3.(9 points)
What did Oscar decide to build? (paragraph II)

ANSWER:   .

Model answer · תשובה The route · הדרך: A detail question, and the question's decide to build appears in the text as decided to build. It is in the last sentence of paragraph II, which is also the last sentence of Oscar's quotation: So I decided to build a machine that finds lost things. Oscar is speaking about himself there, so turn the I into he when you write your answer.
He decided to build a machine that finds lost things. Check: "So I decided to build a machine that finds lost things."
4.(2x8=16 points)
The Finder has two parts. What are they? Give TWO answers from paragraph III.
COMPLETE THE SENTENCES.

(1) One part is   .

(2) The other part is   .

Model answer · תשובה The route · הדרך: This is a double completion question: two answers, eight points each. Both of them sit in the second and third sentences of paragraph III, which are built exactly like the two lines you have to fill in, One part is ... and The other part is .... The question asks what the parts are, so each blank needs a thing and it must read naturally after is. What each part does can be added afterwards, but on its own it does not answer the question.
(1) One part is a small orange button (that you stick on your keys or your glasses).
(2) The other part is a remote control (that hangs on the kitchen wall).
Check: "One part is a small orange button that you stick on your keys or your glasses. The other part is a remote control that hangs on the kitchen wall."
5.(9 points)
What happens when you press the remote control? (paragraph III)
Model answer · תשובה The route · הדרך: A detail question about what follows what. The words press the remote control come straight from the question and stand at the start of the fourth sentence of paragraph III, When you press the remote control ..., so the answer is the rest of that same sentence. Look carefully at the other options: the old radio and the broken alarm clock appear in the paragraph only as the parts Oscar built the first Finder from, and the text says the remote control hangs on the kitchen wall, not that anything falls off the wall.
i. Check: "When you press the remote control, the button makes a loud sound and a little light flashes, so you can find the lost thing in seconds." The radio and the alarm clock are only the parts Oscar used to build the first Finder.
6.(10 points)
What do we learn from paragraph IV?
Model answer · תשובה The route · הדרך: Another main idea question, this time about paragraph IV, so follow the whole paragraph instead of hunting for one sentence: friends who laugh, then a science fair where everyone wants to try the machine, then first prize, then a factory and more than two thousand buyers. Check the other options against the text: the friends laughed at Oscar's machine and are never said to have built any, no price is given anywhere (only the word cheap), and the science fair in the text is his school's, while London is where the national competition took place.
iv. The paragraph moves from friends who "laughed at his strange machine" to first prize in a national competition, a factory that makes Finders, and "more than two thousand people have already bought one". That is how the invention became a success.
7.(9 points)
What did Oscar win last year? (paragraph IV)

ANSWER:   .

Model answer · תשובה The route · הדרך: A detail question with a time signpost. Last year appears once in paragraph IV, at the start of a sentence, and the question's win appears in that same sentence as won, so that is where the answer sits. Write one short sentence beginning He won, and name the prize together with the competition it was won in.
He won first prize in a national competition for young inventors (in London). Check: "Last year, Oscar won first prize in a national competition for young inventors in London."
8.(10 points)
According to Oscar, why was it important to make the Finder small, simple and cheap? (paragraph IV)
Model answer · תשובה The route · הדרך: A "why" question whose answer is inside a quotation. The words small, simple and cheap are taken from Oscar's last sentence in paragraph IV, and the reason follows the linking words so that in that very sentence. The other three options each name something that does appear in the paragraph - the factory, the prize, school - but the text never joins any of them to so that, and only the reason the text gives counts.
ii. Check: "The real work was making it small, simple and cheap, so that everyone can use it." The text gives no other reason.
9.(9 points)
What does Oscar do today? Give ONE answer from paragraph V.

ANSWER:   .

Model answer · תשובה The route · הדרך: Read the instruction as carefully as the question: it asks for ONE answer from paragraph V. The word Today opens that paragraph, and its first sentence names two things Oscar does now, joined by and. Choose either one of them and write it in a short sentence; there is no need to give both.
Any ONE of: he visits schools / he tells other children about his work. Check: "Today, Oscar visits schools and tells other children about his work."
10.(10 points)
What does Oscar hope? (paragraph V)
Model answer · תשובה The route · הדרך: The question asks about a hope, so look for that verb in the text: the question's hope appears there as hopes, in the last sentence of the text, at the end of paragraph V, and the rest of that sentence is the answer. The wrong options take words from the same paragraph and bend them: the one who is planning a next invention, in that very sentence, is Oscar and not his grandfather, who appears in the paragraph only as the person Oscar's best idea came from; the schools are places Oscar visits rather than buyers, and the big laboratory is exactly what Oscar says you do not need.
iii. Check: "he hopes that one day every child will try to invent something that helps others." The text does not mention the other options.
