WRITTEN RECEPTION (100 points)
(ACCESS TO INFORMATION FROM WRITTEN TEXTS)
Read the text below and then answer questions 1-10.
The words marked with a star (*) are explained below the text.
THE WALKING BUS
I On school mornings, the streets near many schools are full
of cars. Most parents drive their children to school because they think it is the fastest
and safest way. But hundreds of cars arriving together cause traffic jams and air pollution
near the school gates. Doctors are worried too. They say that children today spend too many
hours sitting, and that a short walk in the morning is good exercise that helps children
stay healthy and learn better.
II Two years ago, Helen Carter, a retired nurse from Bristol,
England, walked past a school near her home. She saw a long line of cars next to the school
gate. "The children sat in the cars and looked bored and tired," says Helen. "When I was a
girl, I walked to school with my friends every day, and I loved it. So I decided to start
a walking bus."
III A walking bus is a group of children who walk to school
together with two adults. One adult walks at the front of the group and is called the
"driver". The other adult walks at the back and is called the "conductor". The children
wait at special "bus stops" along the route*, and the walking bus picks them up on its way
to school. Everyone in the group wears a yellow vest*, so car drivers can see the group
easily.
IV Helen's first walking bus had only six children. Today there
are eleven walking buses in her neighborhood, and more than 150 children walk to school
with them every morning. Teachers say that the children arrive at school happy and full of
energy. But running the walking buses is not always easy. "The hardest part is finding
enough adults to walk with the groups," Helen explains. "Most parents leave for work very
early, so we need more volunteers*."
V Helen believes that walking buses do much more than bring
children to school. "Children who walk together talk, laugh and make new friends," she
says. "The streets near the school are quieter now, and the air is cleaner. Best of all,
the children get exercise every day without even thinking about it. I hope that one day
every school will have a walking bus."

* vest אפוד / سترة

QUESTIONS (100 points)
Answer questions 1-10 in English according to the text.
In questions 1, 5, 6, 8 and 10, circle the number of the correct answer.
In the other questions, follow the instructions.
1.(9 points)
What do we learn from paragraph I?
Model answer · תשובהThe route · הדרך: This is a main idea question about one paragraph, so read paragraph I
to the end and ask what it is really about. It starts with the cars outside the school and ends
with what doctors say about walking in the morning. Cross out any option that needs information
the paragraph never gives - other countries, how many cars a family has, school opening times.
Paragraph I says that doctors "say that children today spend too many hours
sitting, and that a short walk in the morning is good exercise that helps children stay
healthy and learn better." The other options are not stated in the paragraph.
2.(9 points)
What did Helen see next to the school gate? (paragraph II)
ANSWER: .
Model answer · תשובהThe route · הדרך: This is a detail question, so the answer is written in the text almost
word for word. The question sends you to paragraph II and uses the word saw, so find the
sentence with saw in that paragraph and take the answer from it. Write one short sentence
of your own instead of copying the whole line.
She saw a long line of cars (with children who sat in the cars and looked bored
and tired). Check: "She saw a long line of cars next to the school gate."
3.(9 points)
According to paragraph II, what did Helen decide?
ANSWER: .
Model answer · תשובהThe route · הדרך: Another detail question, and again a word from the question appears in
the text. Helen speaks in the second half of paragraph II, and her closing sentence begins with
So I decided, so that is where the decision is. She says it about herself, so change the
I to she in your answer.
She decided to start a walking bus.
Check: "So I decided to start a walking bus."
4.(2x8=16 points)
Where do the two adults in a walking bus walk?
Give TWO answers from paragraph III. COMPLETE THE SENTENCES.
(1) One adult walks .
(2) The other adult walks .
Model answer · תשובהThe route · הדרך: This is a double completion question: two answers, eight points each,
and both of them sit in the same pair of sentences in paragraph III - the sentence about the
"driver" and the sentence about the "conductor". The question asks where the adults walk,
so each blank needs a place, not a job title, and each one must read naturally after walks.
(1) One adult walks at the front of the group (and is called the "driver").
(2) The other adult walks at the back (and is called the "conductor").
Check: "One adult walks at the front of the group and is called the 'driver'. The other
adult walks at the back and is called the 'conductor'."
5.(9 points)
Why does everyone in the group wear a yellow vest? (paragraph III)
Model answer · תשובהThe route · הדרך: This is a "why" question, so look for a reason word in the text. The
last sentence of paragraph III joins the yellow vest to its reason with the word so, and
that reason is about being seen on the road. The other three options give reasons that sound
possible in real life but are never written in the text, and only the text counts.
Check: "Everyone in the group wears a yellow vest, so car drivers can see
the group easily." The other reasons are not mentioned in the text.
6.(10 points)
What do we learn from paragraph IV?
Model answer · תשובהThe route · הדרך: Another main idea question, this time about paragraph IV. Do not hunt
for one sentence; compare how the paragraph opens with what it says about today. Six children at
the start, eleven walking buses and more than 150 children now - that difference is the point of
the paragraph, and the correct option is the one that names it.
The paragraph moves from "Helen's first walking bus had only six children" to
"Today there are eleven walking buses in her neighborhood, and more than 150 children
walk to school with them every morning." That is how the idea has grown.
7.(9 points)
According to the teachers, how do the children arrive at school? (paragraph IV)
ANSWER: .
Model answer · תשובהThe route · הדרך: A detail question with a clear signpost: it asks what the teachers say,
so find the words Teachers say in paragraph IV and take what follows them. The answer has
two parts, and both of them describe how the children arrive, so give both.
They arrive at school happy and full of energy.
Check: "Teachers say that the children arrive at school happy and full of energy."
8.(10 points)
According to Helen, what is the hardest part of running the walking buses? (paragraph IV)
Model answer · תשובהThe route · הדרך: The question repeats words that also appear in the text: the hardest
part. Use them as your search key, find them inside Helen's quotation in paragraph IV, and the
answer is in the same sentence. The other options are ordinary difficulties that the text never
calls the hardest part.
Check: "The hardest part is finding enough adults to walk with the groups."
Most parents leave for work very early, so more volunteers are needed.
9.(9 points)
According to Helen, what do children who walk together do?
Give ONE answer from paragraph V.
ANSWER: .
Model answer · תשובהThe route · הדרך: Read the instruction as carefully as the question: it asks for ONE
answer from paragraph V. Helen's first quotation there lists three things that children who walk
together do, and you only have to pick one of them and write it in a short sentence. There is no
need to give all three.
Any ONE of: they talk / laugh / make new friends.
Check: "Children who walk together talk, laugh and make new friends."
10.(10 points)
What does Helen hope? (paragraph V)
Model answer · תשובהThe route · הדרך: The question asks about a hope, so look for the verb hope in the
text. It appears in Helen's last sentence, at the very end of paragraph V, and that sentence gives
the answer directly. The other options talk about cars, bus stops and exercise at school - ideas
that sound close to the text but are not what Helen says she hopes for.
Check: "I hope that one day every school will have a walking bus."
Options i, iii and iv are not stated in the text.
