PART I: WRITTEN RECEPTION (70 points)
(ACCESS TO INFORMATION FROM WRITTEN TEXTS)

Read the text below and then answer questions 1-8.

IS LIFE BETTER IN THE COUNTRY?
I   Two years ago, Ben Parker's family left their apartment in a big
city and moved to a small village in the countryside. At first, Ben,
who is now fifteen, was not happy about the move. "In the city, I
could walk to the cinema, meet my friends at the mall, and take a
5bus to almost anywhere," he says. "In the village there is only one
small shop, and the nearest town is thirty minutes away by car."
However, his parents believed that country life would be better for
the whole family.
II   Many families ask themselves the same question: where is life
10better, in the city or in the country? Recently, researchers at
Weston College did a survey to find out. They asked two thousand
people questions about their daily lives. The people who lived in
the countryside said that they felt less stress. They talked about
the quiet, the clean air, and the friendly neighbours who always
15come to help. However, the survey also showed that many city
people were happier with the things they can do near their homes,
such as shopping, sports and concerts.
III   "Both places have good and bad sides," explains Dr. Karen
Wells, who led the survey. "Cities give people jobs, good public
20transport and something to do every evening. But they can also be
noisy, crowded and expensive. In a village, life is cheaper and
calmer, but there are fewer jobs, and without a car it is hard to
get around." According to Dr. Wells, people should think about what
is most important for them before they decide where to live.
25IV   And what about Ben? After two years in the village, he has
changed his mind. He has joined the village football team, he has
learned to ride a horse, and he knows all of his neighbours. "I
still miss the city sometimes," he says. "But now, when I visit my
cousins there, the noise and the crowds bother me. After two days
30I want to go back home, to the village."
QUESTIONS (70 points)
Answer questions 1-8 in English according to the text. In questions 1 and 7, circle the number of the correct answer. In the other questions, follow the instructions.

1.What do we learn about Ben Parker? (paragraph I)
(8 points)
Answer The route · הדרך: This is a "what do we learn" question, so you are not hunting for a single word but deciding which topic paragraph I actually covers. Take the four options one at a time and ask whether that information appears in the paragraph at all. Ben's feelings about the move are stated directly in lines 2-3, while the other three options name things the paragraph never mentions - and an option that is not in the text is wrong even when it sounds reasonable. (שאלת "מה למדנו": בודקים לכל אפשרות אם המידע בכלל מופיע בפסקה, ופוסלים כל מה שהטקסט לא אומר.)
ii) How he felt about moving to the country.
Check: line 3: "At first, Ben... was not happy about the move." The text never says the family will return (i), what his parents' jobs are (iii), or how he travels to school (iv).
2.Why did Ben like living in the city? Give ONE reason from paragraph I.
COMPLETE THE SENTENCE.

In the city, he could .
(8 points)
Answer The route · הדרך: A detail question with a ready-made sentence opening, so the words you need are already in the text. Ben's own words in lines 3-5 give a list of three things he could do in the city, and the question asks for ONE reason, so a single item from that list is a full answer. Just make the item fit the opening: after "he could" the verb stays in its base form, and "my friends" becomes "his friends". (שאלת פרט: התשובה נמצאת בציטוט של בן בשורות 3-5, מספיק פריט אחד מהרשימה, ויש להתאים אותו לפתיח "he could".)
Any ONE of: In the city, he could walk to the cinema / meet his friends at the mall / take a bus to almost anywhere.
Check: lines 3-5: "In the city, I could walk to the cinema, meet my friends at the mall, and take a bus to almost anywhere."
3.Why did the researchers at Weston College do the survey? (paragraph II)
COMPLETE THE ANSWER.

Because they wanted to find out .
(8 points)
Answer The route · הדרך: A purpose question: the words "to find out" come at the end of the sentence in line 11, so nothing follows them - they point backwards. What the researchers wanted to find out is the question that was asked just before, in lines 9-10. The text keeps that pattern - a question is asked, and then we are told who tried to answer it - so read backwards from the survey to the question itself. (שאלת מטרה: הביטוי "to find out" בשורה 11 מפנה אחורה אל השאלה שנשאלה בשורות 9-10.)
Because they wanted to find out where life is better - in the city or in the country.
Check: lines 9-11: "where is life better, in the city or in the country? Recently, researchers at Weston College did a survey to find out."
4.What do we learn about the survey? (paragraph II)
PUT A √ BY THE TWO CORRECT ANSWERS.
  • i) How many people answered the researchers' questions.
  • ii) Why the researchers chose these people.
  • iii) What country people liked about their lives.
  • iv) When the survey began.
  • v) How many city people want to move to the country.
  • vi) What jobs the people had.
(2x7=14 points)
Answer The route · הדרך: Two ticks, seven points each, so treat this as six separate yes-or-no decisions rather than one choice. For each option, try to put your finger on the exact line that gives the information; if you cannot find such a line, the option is out. Paragraph II tells us how many people were asked and what each group said about their lives, but it never says how those people were chosen, when the survey started, or what work they do. (שתי תשובות: עוברים אפשרות-אפשרות ומסמנים רק את מה שאפשר להצביע עליו בשורה מפורשת בטקסט.)
i) How many people answered the researchers' questions, and iii) what country people liked about their lives.
Check: lines 11-12: "They asked two thousand people questions about their daily lives" (= i); lines 12-15: "The people who lived in the countryside said that they felt less stress. They talked about the quiet, the clean air, and the friendly neighbours" (= iii). The text never says why these people were chosen (ii), when the survey began (iv), how many city people want to move (v), or what jobs the people had (vi).
5.According to Dr. Wells, what is one problem with living in a city? (paragraph III)
COMPLETE THE SENTENCE.

Cities can be .
(8 points)
Answer The route · הדרך: A detail question inside a quotation, and the contrast word "But" in line 20 does half the work: what comes before it is what cities give people, and what comes straight after it is what is wrong with them. Your answer sits in line 21, on that second side of the "But". The problems in lines 22-23, fewer jobs and getting around without a car, belong to the village, so they do not answer a question about cities. (שאלת פרט: המילה "But" בשורה 20 מפרידה בין יתרונות העיר לחסרונותיה, והחסרונות שבשורות 22-23 שייכים לכפר.)
Cities can be noisy / crowded / expensive (any one).
Check: lines 20-21: "But they can also be noisy, crowded and expensive."
6.What is ONE new thing that Ben does in the village? (paragraph IV)

ANSWER: .
(8 points)
Answer The route · הדרך: A detail question about what has changed, so look for the verbs. Lines 26-27 list three things that are new for Ben since the move, and the question asks for ONE thing that he does, so pick an activity rather than a state: knowing all his neighbours is something he knows, not something he does. One example is enough, and it should be written as a short full sentence. (שאלת פרט: בשורות 26-27 מופיעים השינויים אצל בן; בוחרים פעילות אחת, לא "מכיר את השכנים", וכותבים משפט קצר ומלא.)
Any ONE of: He plays in the village football team (has joined the team) / rides a horse (has learned to ride a horse).
Check: lines 26-27: "He has joined the village football team, he has learned to ride a horse, and he knows all of his neighbours."
7.What does Ben explain in paragraph IV?
(8 points)
Answer The route · הדרך: "What does Ben explain" asks for the point of the whole paragraph, not for one detail, so decide what paragraph IV is doing before you even read the options. It picks Ben up two years later and reports how he feels about the village now. The three wrong options borrow real words from the text - his cousins, his friends, the move - but attach them to information that paragraph IV does not give, and that is the standard trap in this question type. (שאלת רעיון מרכזי: קודם קובעים מה הפסקה עושה, ואז פוסלים אפשרויות שמשתמשות במילים מהטקסט אך מוסרות מידע שאינו בפסקה.)
iv) How he feels about the village today.
Check: lines 25-30: after two years he has "changed his mind"; when he visits the city, "After two days I want to go back home, to the village." His cousins live in the city and are not said to visit the village (i), he has not stopped meeting friends (ii), and the reason for the move appears in paragraph I, not IV (iii).
8.According to lines 28-29, what bothers Ben when he visits the city?
COMPLETE THE ANSWER.

The .
(8 points)
Answer The route · הדרך: The question hands you the lines, so this is pure location work. In lines 28-29 find the verb "bother" and take whatever stands in front of it as its subject, because the subject is the thing that does the bothering. The opening word "The" is a second clue: it tells you that a noun phrase is wanted here, not a whole sentence. (שאלת איתור: מאתרים את הפועל "bother" בשורות 28-29 ולוקחים את הנושא שלפניו; הפתיח "The" מלמד שנדרש צירוף שמני.)
The noise and the crowds (bother him).
Check: lines 28-29: "when I visit my cousins there, the noise and the crowds bother me."
PART II: WRITTEN PRODUCTION (30 points)
(WRITTEN PRESENTATION)

Write 70-90 words in English on the following topic:

9.What do you think is the best way to spend a vacation?
Give reasons to explain your opinion.

Use this page and the next (pages 7-8) for writing a rough draft.

Write your final version here.
Model composition (84 words) The route · הדרך: This topic is taken word for word from the list of writing topics printed in the מיקוד in force for the winter and summer תשפ״ז sittings of שאלון ג׳ 16382, and in those sittings the exam topic comes from that list. The task has two parts, so answer both: state one clear opinion about the best way to spend a vacation, and then give the reasons behind it. Plan two reasons and one concrete detail for each - that is what fills 70-90 words without repeating yourself. Build it in four moves: your opinion in the first sentence, reason one, reason two, and a closing sentence that comes back to the opinion, joined with linking words such as First, Second and but. Keep the tone personal and neutral, write about yourself with I - the present simple for the opinion and the reasons, and the past simple only where you bring one short example from your own life - and count the words before you copy the final version onto the page. (מטלת כתיבה: הנושא לקוח מרשימת נושאי הכתיבה שבמיקוד שבתוקף לחורף ולקיץ תשפ״ז לשאלון ג׳ 16382, ובמועדי תשפ״ז נושא הכתיבה נלקח מן הרשימה הזאת. בוחרים עמדה ברורה, מפתחים שתי סיבות עם פירוט לכל אחת, מסיימים במשפט שחוזר אל הדעה, ומקפידים על 70-90 מילים.)

In my opinion, the best way to spend a vacation is at home with my family. First, a long trip is tiring, and after a school year I want to sleep late and read. Second, at home I can meet my friends every day, and we go to the pool or to the park together. Last summer we did that, and it was the best month of my year. A hotel is nice, but for me a quiet vacation at home is much better.

How the composition is assessed: Content (a clear answer to the question, with reasons) · Organization (an opening, connected ideas, a closing sentence) · Language (vocabulary and grammar).
Note: points are taken off for compositions that are much shorter or longer than 70-90 words.
