PART I: WRITTEN RECEPTION (70 points)
(ACCESS TO INFORMATION FROM WRITTEN TEXTS)

Read the text below and then answer questions 1-8.

SAVING OLD FILMS
I   Grace Holden works at a film archive in London. Her job is to save old
films - some of them more than a hundred years old. Last month, she finished
working on a short film from 1921. “When we found the box, the film inside was
almost black,” she says. “Nobody had watched it for ninety years. After six months
5of work, we could finally see the faces again: a street, a market, children
laughing at the camera.”
II   Saving an old film is slow and careful work. Films from the early days of
cinema were printed on a material that becomes weak over the years and can even
fall apart. Holden and her team clean the film by hand, repair the torn parts, and
10then scan every picture into a computer - a single film can contain more than
fifty thousand pictures. “The computer helps us remove the marks and scratches,”
Holden explains. “But most of the job is still done by people. You need patient
hands and a lot of love.”
III   Why is this work important? “Old films are not just entertainment,” says
15Professor David Lang, a film historian. “They are a window into the past. They
show us how ordinary people lived: what they wore, how they shopped, how a
street looked before the cars came. For historians, one minute of film can teach
more than a hundred photographs.” Schools and museums also use the films in
their history lessons and exhibitions.
20IV   The archive also shows the restored films to the public. Last year, thousands
of people came to a special evening where the film from 1921 was shown with live
music. Some visitors discovered their own family history. One woman recognized
her grandmother, then a girl of eight, smiling in the market. “People in the
audience were crying,” says Holden. “She had never seen her grandmother as a child.”
25V   There is still much to do. Experts believe that most of the films made
before 1930 have already been lost forever, and the films that remain will not
wait: every year, more of them become too weak to save. Boxes of forgotten
films arrive at the archive every week, from attics, schools and old cinemas.
“We are in a race against time,” says Lang. “Every film we save is a piece of
30memory that will not disappear.”
QUESTIONS (70 points)
Answer questions 1-8 in English, according to the text. In questions 1 and 5, circle the number of the correct answer. In the other questions, follow the instructions.

1.What are we told about Grace Holden in paragraph I?
(8 points)
Answer The route · הדרך: A multiple-choice question about which piece of information paragraph I really gives, so treat it as four small checks against lines 1-6. Only one option can be tied to words that are actually on the page: lines 2-3 tell us which film she worked on last month. The paragraph offers no reason for her choice of job, no number of saved films and no starting date - and “Last month” in line 2 tells us when she finished that piece of work, not when she began working at the archive.
ii) What film she worked on recently.
Check: lines 2-3: “Last month, she finished working on a short film from 1921.” The text never says why she chose this job, how many films she has saved, or when she started working there.
2.Why must Holden and her team work carefully with old films? Give ONE answer from paragraph II.
COMPLETE THE ANSWER.

Because the material of early films can .
(8 points)
Answer The route · הדרך: A reason question in completion form. The frame already supplies the subject - the material of early films - so the only thing you are hunting for is what that material can do. The word “material” appears once in the whole text, in line 8, and the two verbs that belong to it run from there into line 9. After “can” you need the base form, so the “becomes” of the text turns into “become” in your answer. שאלת סיבה בצורת השלמה. תחילת המשפט כבר נותנת את הנושא - החומר של הסרטים המוקדמים - ולכן מחפשים רק מה החומר הזה עלול לעשות. המילה material מופיעה פעם אחת בכל הטקסט, בשורה 8, ושני הפעלים ששייכים לה נמשכים משם אל שורה 9. אחרי can בא פועל בצורת הבסיס, ולכן becomes שבטקסט הופך אצלכם ל-become.
Because the material of early films can become weak (over the years) / even fall apart.
Check: lines 7-9: “Films from the early days of cinema were printed on a material that becomes weak over the years and can even fall apart.”
3.What do we learn in paragraph II about the computer?
COMPLETE THE SENTENCE.

The computer helps the team .
(8 points)
Answer The route · הדרך: Another completion, and it hangs on a single word: computer. That word appears twice in paragraph II - in line 10, where every picture is scanned into the computer, and in line 11, inside Holden’s own words, where she says what the computer helps with. The frame matches her quotation, so take what comes after “helps us”; the frame has already replaced “us” with “the team”, and the verb that follows stays in the base form.
The computer helps the team remove the marks and scratches.
Check: lines 10-11: “then scan every picture into a computer... The computer helps us remove the marks and scratches.”
4.According to Professor Lang, what can old films show us? Give ONE answer from paragraph III.

ANSWER: .
(8 points)
Answer The route · הדרך: An open detail question with one free line, but the answer still comes out of the text, and the question tells you whose words to use: Professor Lang’s. The words you need sit inside his quotation: “show us” in line 16 is followed by “how ordinary people lived”, and only then does a colon open a short list of examples that runs on into line 17. That general phrase, or any one example from the list, earns the mark. Write your answer as a short phrase that fits after “ANSWER:” rather than as a full sentence, and keep the past tense the text uses.
Any ONE of: how ordinary people lived / what they wore / how they shopped / how a street looked before the cars came.
Check: lines 15-17: “They show us how ordinary people lived: what they wore, how they shopped, how a street looked before the cars came.”
5.What is described in paragraph IV?
(8 points)
Answer The route · הדרך: This multiple-choice question asks what paragraph IV describes, so read all of lines 20-24 before you choose. The paragraph opens by saying that the archive shows its restored films to the public, and the rest of it tells the story of one such showing: the thousands who came to a special evening, the 1921 film with live music, and the woman who recognized her grandmother. Live music is mentioned across the end of line 21 and the start of line 22, but nothing in the paragraph says how it is chosen; nothing there explains why the 1921 film nearly disappeared, and nothing there says how the archive picks the films it works on. An option that borrows a word from the paragraph is not right for that reason alone.
i) What happened at a special evening at the archive.
Check: lines 20-24: thousands of people came to a special evening where the film from 1921 was shown with live music, and one woman recognized her grandmother. The paragraph does not explain how music is chosen, why the film was almost lost, or how films are selected.
6.Why were people in the audience crying? Give ONE answer from paragraph IV.
COMPLETE THE ANSWER.

Because one of the visitors recognized .
(8 points)
Answer The route · הדרך: A reason question in which cause and result sit side by side. Holden’s words about the crying run from the end of line 23 into line 24, so the cause is the sentence just before them, lines 22-23: one woman recognized her grandmother, then a girl of eight, in the market. The frame already hands you the verb “recognized”, so what you add is its object - a noun phrase, not a new sentence. The last sentence of the paragraph confirms the link: she had never seen her grandmother as a child.
Because one of the visitors recognized her grandmother (as a girl of eight) in the film.
Check: lines 22-24: “One woman recognized her grandmother, then a girl of eight, smiling in the market. ‘People in the audience were crying’... ‘She had never seen her grandmother as a child.’”
7.Why does Lang say that the archive is in “a race against time”? Give ONE answer from paragraph V.
COMPLETE THE ANSWER.

Because every year, more old films .
(8 points)
Answer The route · הדרך: Here you are asked to explain an image, “a race against time”. The phrase itself sits in line 29, but the explanation comes earlier: lines 26-27 say what happens every year. The frame repeats the words “every year”, and that is your signal - but the words standing right after “every year” in the text are “more of them”, which the frame has already turned into “more old films”; the completion is the verb phrase that comes after those words. After a plural subject the verb stays in the present simple, with no “-s”. כאן מתבקש הסבר לביטוי a race against time. הביטוי עצמו נמצא בשורה 29, אבל ההסבר מוקדם יותר: שורות 26-27 אומרות מה קורה בכל שנה. תחילת המשפט חוזרת על המילים every year, וזה הסימן - אבל מיד אחרי every year בטקסט בא more of them, שתחילת המשפט כבר החליפה ב-more old films, וההשלמה היא צירוף הפועל שבא אחריו. אחרי נושא ברבים הפועל נשאר בהווה פשוט, בלי s.
Because every year, more old films become too weak to save.
Check: lines 26-27: “the films that remain will not wait: every year, more of them become too weak to save.”
8.What do we learn in paragraphs IV-V about the archive and its work?
PUT A √ BY THE TWO CORRECT ANSWERS.
  • i) The public can watch the films that the archive has saved.
  • ii) The film from 1921 was shown without music.
  • iii) Some visitors find their own family history in the films.
  • iv) The archive has already saved all the films made before 1930.
  • v) The archive stopped receiving old films last year.
  • vi) Lang believes that the work can wait a few more years.
(2x7=14 points)
Answer The route · הדרך: This is the double question, two answers of seven points each, so tick exactly two boxes and no more. Take the six statements one at a time against paragraphs IV-V (lines 20-30). Two of them can be pinned to a line: line 20 for the showings that are open to the public, line 22 for the family history. The other four each contradict something written there - the special evening did have live music, most of the films from before 1930 are already lost rather than saved, boxes still arrive every week, and Lang’s own words are that the archive is racing.
i) The public can watch the films that the archive has saved, and iii) some visitors find their own family history in the films.
Check: line 20: “The archive also shows the restored films to the public” (= i); line 22: “Some visitors discovered their own family history” (= iii). The film from 1921 was shown WITH live music (not ii), most films made before 1930 have already been lost forever (not iv), boxes of forgotten films arrive at the archive every week (not v), and Lang says “We are in a race against time” (not vi).
PART II: WRITTEN PRODUCTION (30 points)
(WRITTEN PRESENTATION)
IMPORTANT: You may use words and/or phrases from the text in Part I.
However, you must NOT copy a sentence or sentences from the text.

Write 80-100 words in English on the following topic.

9.Would you like to watch a film that was made a hundred years ago? Write a composition explaining why you would or would not.

Use this page and the next (pages 7-8) for writing a rough draft.

Write your final version here:
Model composition (88 words) The route · הדרך: The route here is a plan. The task is a yes-or-no question followed by reasons, and it carries 30 of the 100 points, so decide your answer before you write anything. Then build four moves: an opening sentence that states your choice, two or three reasons with a detail or an example for each, one sentence about what such a film would give you personally, and a closing sentence that comes back to your choice. The model answer leans on “would” and “could” together with the present simple, because the question is about something imagined and not something that happened; past forms appear only where it looks back at something that really happened: the making of the film, the people in it, and where the writer’s own family lived. Keep the register semi-formal - no slang and no short forms - stay inside 80-100 words, and borrow single words and phrases from the text without copying a whole sentence.

I would love to watch a film that was made a hundred years ago. I am very interested in history, and old films open a window into the past. In a film like this, I could see how ordinary people lived: their clothes, their streets and their markets. Photographs show us only one moment, but a film shows life moving. Maybe I would even recognize the city where my family lived. Watching people who smiled at a camera a hundred years ago would feel like traveling in time.

How the composition is assessed: Content (a clear answer to the question, with reasons and examples) · Organization (an opening, connected ideas, a closing sentence) · Language (vocabulary and grammar).
Note: the model uses words and phrases from the text (a window into the past, how ordinary people lived) but does not copy any complete sentence - exactly what the IMPORTANT box allows. Points are taken off for compositions that are much shorter or longer than 80-100 words.
