PART I: WRITTEN RECEPTION (70 points)
(ACCESS TO INFORMATION FROM WRITTEN TEXTS)
Read the article below and then answer questions 1-9.
A glossary of the underlined words (numbers 1-3) is provided below the article.
LET TEENAGERS SLEEP
I Doctors agree that teenagers need about nine hours of sleep every
night, but very few of them actually get it. During the teenage years, the body's inner
clock moves forward, so most teenagers do not feel sleepy before eleven o'clock at night.
Yet in many countries the school day begins at eight in the morning or even earlier, and
millions of students sit through their first lesson feeling drowsy1.
This lack of sleep is harmful because it weakens the memory and makes it harder to
concentrate in lessons. Sleep researchers now call teenage tiredness a hidden health
problem.
II One possible answer sounds almost too simple: begin the school day
later. Over the past few years, schools in the United States, Britain, and New Zealand
have moved their first lesson from eight o'clock to nine. Because a later start matches
the teenage body clock, students can get a full night's sleep without going to bed
earlier, and they arrive at school more awake. "A teenager who begins lessons at nine
learns much more than the same teenager at eight," says sleep researcher Karen Mills.
"The first schools that tried it saw the difference within weeks."
III However, later start times have not spread as fast as many expected.
Changing the timetable2 affects the whole community: school buses must
run at different hours, afternoon activities finish later, and many parents worry because
they cannot drive their children to school before work. Attitude is a difficulty as well.
"Many adults still believe that waking up early builds character," Mills explains. "They
think a tired teenager is simply a lazy teenager, so they see no reason to change
anything."
IV Can these opinions change? A study carried out in Australia suggests
that they can. Researchers asked a high school near Sydney to begin its lessons at nine
o'clock instead of eight for one full term. During the experiment, the students kept
sleep diaries3, writing down when they went to bed, when they woke up,
and how tired they felt in class. To check whether the later start helped, the
researchers also compared the students' grades with their grades from the term before.
V The results were impressive. By the end of the term, the students
were sleeping almost an hour more each night, and their grades improved in nearly every
subject. "The extra sleep changed the mood of the whole school," says Mills. "Students
who used to sit in class half asleep now take part in every lesson. My dream is that one
day, every high school will give its students the gift of a later morning."

In questions 1, 4, 6, and 8, circle the number of the correct answer.
In the other questions, follow the instructions.
1.(7 points)
What do we learn from paragraph I?
Model answer · תשובהThe route · הדרך: A main-idea question about a whole paragraph, so the answer has to fit paragraph I from its
first sentence to its last, and not one fact inside it. Follow the chain the paragraph builds:
the inner clock moves forward, sleep starts late, the school day starts early, and the first
lesson finds the students drowsy. Then weigh the options against what the paragraph really
says. The doctors are there only to tell us how many hours teenagers need; the eight o'clock
start is stated but never explained; and "do not feel sleepy before eleven" is a fact about the
body, not about what teenagers enjoy.
Paragraph I explains that the teenage body clock moves forward, so teenagers
"do not feel sleepy before eleven o'clock at night", while school "begins at eight in
the morning or even earlier" - which is why students sit through their first lesson
feeling drowsy.
(הפסקה מסבירה מדוע תלמידים רבים מגיעים לבית הספר עייפים.)
2.(8 points)
According to paragraph I, why is the lack of sleep harmful? Give ONE answer. COMPLETE THE ANSWER.
Because it .
Model answer · תשובהThe route · הדרך: A completion question about a detail the article states outright. The word "harmful" in the
question stands in paragraph I as well, so find that sentence: it names the damage in a clause
that opens with "because". The stem "Because it" means a verb has to come next, and since the
question asks for ONE answer, one of the two effects in that clause is enough.
שאלת השלמה על פרט מפורש: המילה harmful מופיעה גם בפסקה I, ושם מגיע הנימוק. אחרי Because it צריך לבוא פועל, והשאלה מבקשת תשובה אחת בלבד, כך שדי באחד משני הנזקים.
Because it weakens the memory / makes it harder to concentrate in lessons.
(Either part alone is acceptable.) Check: "This lack of sleep is harmful because it
weakens the memory and makes it harder to concentrate in lessons."
(מופיע במפורש בסוף הפסקה הראשונה.)
3.(7 points)
Name ONE country in which schools have moved their first lesson to a later hour.
(paragraph II)
ANSWER: .
Model answer · תשובהThe route · הדרך: A locate-the-detail question with a limit written into it: ONE country, and the paragraph is
named for you as well. A full list is not what is wanted. Paragraph II puts all of them in a
single sentence about moving the first lesson from eight o'clock to nine; take one of them and
write it as the article writes it. Australia is the trap here: it does stand in the article,
but in paragraph IV, where a single high school near Sydney began at nine for one full term as
an experiment, and not as a country whose schools have moved their first lesson.
Any ONE of: the United States / Britain / New Zealand.
Check: "schools in the United States, Britain, and New Zealand have moved their first
lesson from eight o'clock to nine."
(שלוש המדינות מנויות בפסקה השנייה; יש לציין אחת בלבד.)
4.(8 points)
What advantage of a later school day is mentioned in paragraph II?
Model answer · תשובהThe route · הדרך: A detail question with two limits built into it: one paragraph, and one kind of information - an
advantage. Look in paragraph II for what the later start gives the students; the words "a full
night's sleep" mark the sentence. Then test the options one by one. Homework and the teachers'
preparation do not appear in the article at all, and the afternoon activities do appear - but
in paragraph III, among the difficulties, where the point is that they finish later.
שאלת פרט עם שתי הגבלות: פסקה אחת, וסוג מידע אחד - יתרון. חפשו בפסקה II מה נותנת התחלה מאוחרת לתלמידים. שיעורי בית והכנת השיעורים של המורים אינם מופיעים בכתבה כלל, ופעילויות אחר הצהריים מופיעות רק בפסקה III וכקושי, לא כיתרון. ii. Check: "students can get a full night's sleep without going to bed earlier,
and they arrive at school more awake." The other options are not mentioned in the
paragraph.
(היתרון המצוין בפסקה: התלמידים מגיעים ערניים יותר.)
5.(8 points)
According to paragraph III, why do many parents worry about a later timetable? COMPLETE THE ANSWER.
Because they cannot .
Model answer · תשובהThe route · הדרך: A cause question aimed at one group of people. Paragraph III lists three consequences of
changing the timetable - the buses, the afternoon activities and the parents - so take only the
part that belongs to the parents. The stem ends with "cannot", so what you write after it has
to begin with a verb in its base form.
שאלת סיבה הממוקדת בקבוצה אחת. בפסקה III מנויים שלושה קשיים שנובעים משינוי מערכת השעות - ההסעות, פעילויות אחר הצהריים וההורים - וכאן צריך רק את החלק של ההורים. אחרי cannot יבוא פועל בצורת הבסיס.
Because they cannot drive their children to school before work.
Check: "many parents worry because they cannot drive their children to school before
work."
(מופיע במפורש בפסקה השלישית.)
6.(8 points)
What does Mills explain in paragraph III?
Model answer · תשובהThe route · הדרך: The question asks what a named speaker explains, so the evidence is the words inside her
quotation marks and not the writer's sentences around them. Mills has one speaking turn in
paragraph III, and it follows the sentence "Attitude is a difficulty as well.", which comes
after the writer's own list of practical problems. The buses and the parents do sit in that
paragraph, but in the writer's sentence rather than in what Mills says; and shortening the
afternoon activities is not offered by the article, which says only that they finish later.
השאלה מבקשת מה מסבירה דוברת מסוימת, ולכן הראיה היא המילים שבתוך המרכאות שלה ולא המשפטים של הכתב סביבן. להסעות ולהורים יש מקום בפסקה III, אבל במשפט של הכתב; קיצור פעילויות אחר הצהריים אינו מופיע בכתבה כלל. iv. Check: "Many adults still believe that waking up early builds character,"
Mills explains - they think a tired teenager is simply a lazy teenager, so they see no
reason to change anything.
(הציטוט של מילס בפסקה השלישית עוסק באמונה של מבוגרים על השכמה מוקדמת.)
7.(8 points)
In the study described in paragraph IV, what did the students write down in their sleep
diaries? Give ONE detail.
ANSWER: .
Model answer · תשובהThe route · הדרך: Another locate-the-detail question, and the words "sleep diaries" in the question lead straight
to the sentence that holds the answer. Three things are listed there after "writing down", and
the question asks for ONE of them. Keep the grades out of it: comparing them was the
researchers' own check, in the next sentence, and not something the students wrote.
שאלת איתור פרט נוספת: הצירוף sleep diaries מוביל ישירות למשפט הנכון בפסקה IV. אחרי writing down מנויים שלושה דברים, והשאלה מבקשת אחד בלבד. השוואת הציונים אינה שייכת לכאן - היא הבדיקה של החוקרים, במשפט שאחריו.
Any ONE of: when they went to bed / when they woke up /
how tired they felt in class.
Check: "the students kept sleep diaries, writing down when they went to bed, when they
woke up, and how tired they felt in class."
(שלושת הפרטים מנויים בפסקה הרביעית; יש לציין אחד בלבד.)
8.(8 points)
What are we told about the study that is described in paragraph IV?
Model answer · תשובהThe route · הדרך: This one asks which piece of information about the study the article actually gives, so the way
in is elimination. Go through paragraph IV and mark what it does report: a study carried out in
Australia, a high school near Sydney, one full term at nine o'clock instead of eight, the sleep
diaries, and then the sentence that opens "To check whether the later start helped". That last
sentence is your answer. Nothing in the paragraph gives a reason for the school agreeing, an
opinion from the teachers, or a number of students.
השאלה מבקשת איזה מידע על המחקר אכן נמסר, ולכן דרך הפעולה היא פסילה. סמנו מה כן נאמר בפסקה IV: מחקר באוסטרליה, בית ספר ליד סידני, תקופת לימודים שלמה בשעה תשע, יומני שינה, והמשפט שפותח במילים To check. אין בפסקה סיבה להסכמת בית הספר, אין דעה של המורים ואין מספר תלמידים. i. Check: "To check whether the later start helped, the researchers also
compared the students' grades with their grades from the term before" (in addition to
the sleep diaries). The other details are not given.
(הפסקה מתארת כיצד נבדקה הצלחת הניסוי: יומני שינה והשוואת ציונים.)
9.(8 points)
According to paragraph V, what shows that the experiment was a success? Give ONE
answer. COMPLETE THE ANSWER.
The students .
Model answer · תשובהThe route · הדרך: A completion question about results. Paragraph V opens by calling them impressive and then gives
two of them inside one sentence, one about sleep and one about grades; the question asks for
ONE, so either of them earns the point. Do not finish with Mills' last sentence: her dream that
one day every high school will give its students "the gift of a later morning" is a wish for
the future, not a result of this experiment.
שאלת השלמה על תוצאות. פסקה V פותחת בכך שהתוצאות מרשימות ומיד מוסרת שתיים מהן באותו משפט - שינה וציונים - והשאלה מבקשת אחת בלבד. אין לסיים במשפט האחרון של מילס: החלום שלה שיום אחד כל בית ספר תיכון ייתן לתלמידיו בוקר מאוחר יותר הוא משאלה לעתיד, ולא תוצאה של הניסוי.
The students were sleeping almost an hour more each night /
their grades improved in nearly every subject. (Either answer is acceptable.)
Check: "the students were sleeping almost an hour more each night, and their grades
improved in nearly every subject."
(שתי התוצאות מופיעות בתחילת הפסקה החמישית; יש לציין אחת בלבד.)
PART II: LEXICAL KNOWLEDGE (30 points)
(VOCABULARY)
Below are five questions, (10) to (14). In each question there are six items
(words or chunks) and three definitions.
In each question, match three of the items 1-6 to the definitions.
Write the number of the item next to its definition, as shown in the example.
(2 points for each correct match.)
EXAMPLE
1. a wallet 2. a ladder 3. a stadium 4. a recipe 5. an umbrella 6. a suitcase
3 a large building where people watch sports games
5 something that keeps you dry when it rains
4 instructions for cooking a dish
(10)(3x2=6 points)
1. to admire 2. to complain 3. to disturb 4. to hesitate 5. to punish 6. to remind
to say that you are not happy about something
to interrupt someone who is trying to work or rest
to help someone remember something
Model answer · תשובהThe route · הדרך: The first of the matching questions, so set your method here: six verbs against three
definitions means three of the verbs are meant to stay unused, and there are only three boxes to
fill. Start from the definition you are surest of, write the number of the verb that matches it
in the box, and cross that verb off the list at once. Read every definition to its end - the
third one turns on helping another person, and that is what separates it from simply
remembering by yourself.
שאלת ההתאמה הראשונה, וכאן נקבעת השיטה: שישה פעלים מול שלוש הגדרות, כלומר שלושה פעלים אמורים להישאר בלי התאמה, ויש רק שלוש תיבות למילוי. התחילו מההגדרה הבטוחה ביותר, כתבו בתיבה את מספר הפועל המתאים לה ומחקו אותו מיד מהרשימה. קראו כל הגדרה עד סופה - בשלישית העזרה מופנית לאדם אחר, וזה בדיוק מה שמייחד אותה. 2 to complain = to say you are not happy (להתלונן);
3 to disturb = to interrupt someone (להפריע);
6 to remind = to help someone remember (להזכיר).
Distractors: to admire (להעריץ),
to hesitate (להסס), to punish (להעניש).
(11)(3x2=6 points)
1. a ceremony 2. a crowd 3. a fee 4. a journey 5. an opponent 6. a wound
a long trip from one place to another
money that you pay for a service
a large group of people in one place
Model answer · תשובהThe route · הדרך: Six nouns and three definitions. Start from the kind of thing each definition names - a trip, a
sum of money, a group of people - because that alone clears items away before you weigh their
meanings: an opponent is a single person and not a large group, a ceremony is an event rather
than the people who fill a place, and a wound is an injury and none of the three. Then place
the three items that do fit.
שישה שמות עצם ושלוש הגדרות. התחילו מסוג הדבר שכל הגדרה מתארת - מסע, סכום כסף, קבוצת אנשים - וזה לבדו מסיר פריטים: יריב הוא אדם אחד ולא קהל גדול, טקס הוא אירוע ולא האנשים שנמצאים במקום, ופצע הוא פגיעה בגוף ואינו אף אחד משלושת הדברים האלה. 4 a journey = a long trip (מסע);
3 a fee = money paid for a service (תשלום, אגרה);
2 a crowd = a large group of people (המון אנשים).
Distractors: a ceremony (טקס),
an opponent (יריב), a wound (פצע).
Model answer · תשובהThe route · הדרך: Adjectives are easiest to place if you try each one in a short phrase with a noun and listen to
how it sounds. The three definitions here belong to three separate areas - how long something
lasts, how exact it is, and how a person behaves towards others - so settle the area first and
only then choose the word. Wealthy is about money and jealous is about a feeling, and neither
of those areas is asked for in this question.
שמות תואר קל יותר לשבץ אם מנסים כל אחד בצירוף קצר עם שם עצם ובודקים אם זה נשמע טבעי. שלוש ההגדרות שייכות לשלושה תחומים שונים - משך, דיוק והתנהגות כלפי אחרים - ולכן קבעו קודם את התחום. wealthy עוסק בכסף ו-jealous ברגש, ושני התחומים האלה אינם נדרשים בשאלה זו. 4 permanent = lasting forever (קבוע);
1 accurate = correct in every detail (מדויק);
5 rude = not polite (גס רוח).
Distractors: delicate (עדין),
jealous (קנאי), wealthy (עשיר).
Model answer · תשובהThe route · הדרך: Every item here is an adverb, so the ending they share cannot tell them apart; only the meaning
can. Two of the three definitions say when something happens, and they pull in opposite
directions, "at once" against "in the end, after a long time", so read each definition to its
last word before you write a number. Temporarily is a time word as well, but it says how long
something lasts, not when it happens.
כל הפריטים כאן הם תוארי פועל, ולכן הסיומת המשותפת אינה מבדילה ביניהם ורק המשמעות מבדילה. שתיים מההגדרות אומרות מתי משהו קורה ומושכות לכיוונים הפוכים: מיד לעומת בסופו של דבר. גם temporarily היא מילת זמן, אבל היא אומרת כמה זמן משהו נמשך ולא מתי הוא קורה. 4 gradually = little by little (בהדרגה);
3 eventually = in the end (בסופו של דבר);
5 immediately = at once (מיד).
Distractors: carelessly (ברשלנות),
deliberately (בכוונה),
temporarily (באופן זמני).
(14)(3x2=6 points)
1. to break down 2. to carry on 3. to deal with 4. to set off 5. to show up 6. to throw away
to continue doing something
to arrive at a place where people are expecting you
to get rid of something you do not need
Model answer · תשובהThe route · הדרך: Six phrasal verbs. In a phrasal verb the small word after the verb changes the whole meaning, so
read each item as one unit instead of translating the verb on its own. Two of the items draw
the same picture of a journey and are easy to swap: one of them is about leaving and one about
arriving, and only the arriving one fits a definition that mentions people who are expecting
you. Match by what the whole phrase does - continuing, arriving, getting rid of something.
שישה צירופי פועל. בצירוף כזה המילית שאחרי הפועל משנה את כל המשמעות, ולכן יש לקרוא כל פריט כיחידה אחת ולא לתרגם רק את הפועל. שני פריטים מציירים אותה תמונת נסיעה וקל להתבלבל ביניהם - אחד ביציאה לדרך ואחד בהגעה - ורק ההגעה מתאימה להגדרה שמדברת על אנשים שמחכים לכם. 2 to carry on = to continue (להמשיך);
5 to show up = to arrive (להגיע, להופיע);
6 to throw away = to get rid of (לזרוק, להיפטר מ-).
Distractors: to break down (להתקלקל),
to set off (לצאת לדרך),
to deal with (להתמודד עם).
מחוון - תשובות סופיות / Answer Key
לבדיקה עצמית מהירה; הפתרונות המלאים בגוף השאלון.
