if, unless, and giving advice

בחטיבה העליונה התנאי הריאלי הופך לכלי מלא, ומצטרפות אליו שתי דרכים נוספות לנסח תנאי. If + present simple, will + base - תנאי אפשרי בעתיד. Unless - אותה הודעה בדיוק, אבל מהצד השלילי: unless כבר מכיל את המילה "לא". וIf + going to או if + present continuous - כשמדובר בתוכנית, ואז בפסוקית הראשית בא מודאל או ציווי שנותן עצה.

The structure

three ways to set a condition

(1) If + present simple בפסוקית התנאי, will + base בפסוקית הראשית. אין will אחרי if. (2) unless מחליף את if ... not, ולכן הפועל אחריו חיובי: If you do not hurry, you will miss it = Unless you hurry, you will miss it. שתי שלילות באותה פסוקית הן שגיאה. (3) כשפסוקית התנאי מדברת על תוכנית - if + going to או if + present continuous - הפסוקית הראשית אינה חוזה אלא ממליצה: היא נושאת מודאל (should, must, can) או ציווי.

שתי מלכודות: will אחרי if (אסור), ושלילה כפולה אחרי unless (unless you do not hurry - שגוי, כי ה"לא" כבר בתוך המילה). פיסוק: פסוקית התנאי פותחת ← פסיק, שנייה ← בלי פסיק.

6. The comma rule
