פועל מורכב (phrasal verb) הוא פועל + חלקיק (up, out, on, after...), ולעיתים המשמעות שונה לחלוטין מהפועל המקורי: give up = לוותר, find out = לגלות, look after = לטפל ב-, put off = לדחות, turn down = לדחות הצעה / להחליש. חלק מהפעלים ניתנים להפרדה (separable): אפשר turn the light on או turn on the light, אבל עם כינוי חייבים להפריד: turn it on (לא turn on it). חלקם אינם ניתנים להפרדה (inseparable): look after him (לא look him after). כדאי ללמוד כל פועל מורכב עם המשמעות שלו, כמו מילה חדשה.
