Reading: The Job That Changed Shape
Label each line by the move it makes in the argument. In the last one, type the word from the text that fits the definition.
Does the machine take the job, or only part of it?
claim → evidence → counter-argument → response
הסימן שמצילים בו את עצמכם הוא מילות המסגור: the critics say, they add, a reader will already be objecting.
| claim | Automation rarely swallows a job whole.
| evidence | a branch was cheaper, so banks opened more | הראיה |
| counter | the critics say it is different in kind | הטענה שכנגד |
| response | Yet it still describes tasks rather than jobs.
The Job That Changed Shape
I · The claim
Whenever a new machine appears, the same headline follows: this technology will destroy jobs. The fear is understandable, and not always wrong: some jobs do disappear. But the headline hides what usually happens. Automation rarely swallows a job whole. It takes over some of the tasks inside the job, leaves the others, and quietly changes what the person does all day. The job survives. Its shape does not.
II · The first piece of evidence
Consider the cash machine. When banks installed the first ones, counting notes seemed to be the teller's main purpose, and the machine seemed to make the job unnecessary. Counting notes did move to the machine. Yet a branch was now cheaper to run, so banks opened more, and the staff spent their hours on work the machine could not do: explaining a loan, solving a complaint, opening an account.
III · The second piece of evidence
The same pattern appears in the office. Spreadsheets removed the long afternoons of adding columns by hand, and the clerks whose entire job was that arithmetic were the ones who suffered. Accountants, however, did not vanish. Freed from the arithmetic, they were asked for something the software could not supply: judgement about what the numbers meant, and advice about what to do next. The task was automated. The occupation was rebuilt around what remained.
IV · The counter-argument
A reader who has met this argument will already be objecting, and the objection deserves an answer. This time, the critics say, the technology is different in kind. Earlier machines replaced muscle and routine, while the new systems write, translate, summarise and diagnose: they reach into the thinking work that was supposed to be safe. Comfort drawn from the last two centuries, they add, proves nothing about the next twenty years.
V · The response, and what the writer will not hide
Part of that objection is right, and should be granted. Yet it still describes tasks rather than jobs. A radiologist reads scans, but also calms a frightened patient, argues with colleagues over an unclear case, and decides which test to order. A system that reads scans superbly takes one card out of that hand; it does not play the hand. There is a harder objection, which no honest argument should dodge. Even when the number of jobs holds steady, the person who loses the old task is often not the one who gains the new. That is a real cost, but it is an argument about who carries the burden of change, not evidence that work is disappearing.
How Module E works
- הפסקה פותחת בכותרת העיתונאית (this technology will destroy jobs), מסייגת אותה (not always wrong), ורק אז מגיעה למילה But.
- Automation rarely swallows a job whole. It takes over some of the tasks inside the job. ✓
בפסקה IV יש שתיים: the critics say ו-they add.
- This time, the critics say, the technology is different in kind. ✓
Part of that objection is right, and should be granted.
- He grants part of it, then argues that the objection describes tasks, not whole jobs. ✓
Remember
- 2מילות מסגור כמו the critics say ו-they add מסמנות שהדובר כרגע הוא לא הכותב.
(Part of that is right)
