Is Social Media Good for Teenagers?

IIt is eleven at night and a group chat is still moving. A fifteen year old has read the last twenty messages twice: once for the joke, and once to be sure it is not about her. The case against social media is easy to make, and it deserves to be made properly before anyone answers it.

IIStart with time. Hours vanish into scrolling, hours that once belonged to sport, homework or sleep. Then there is comparison. A feed shows other people in moments they chose and edited, and an ordinary Tuesday cannot win against that. Worst of all is cyberbullying. Cruel words in a schoolyard stop at the gate, but a message arrives at midnight and can be read again the next morning.

IIIAll of that is true, and none of it is the whole story. The same app that delivers the cruel message also carries a friendship through a summer apart. A student who never speaks in class may write easily online. A teenager having a hard year may find others who have had one too.

IVThe case against describes real damage, but it blames the wrong thing. Two students can hold the same app and have very different years. What separates them is everything around the app: whether the phone sleeps outside the bedroom, whether anyone taught them to wait before posting, and whether their friendships also exist somewhere the screen cannot reach.

VThat is why I would rather teach those habits than take the app away. A teenager whose phone is removed at fourteen still meets the same feed at eighteen, with no practice behind him. A ban buys one quiet year, and the habit a teenager builds now will still be useful long after that year is over.
