Reading: Dig Now, or Leave It in the Ground?

Dig Now, or Leave It in the Ground?

I  A wall appears under a city street, and everything stops. The digger is switched off, the builders wait, and archaeologists come to decide what the stones are. It happens wherever a modern city sits on an older one, and behind it lies a question that divides archaeologists: when a buried site is found, should it be dug out now, or covered again and left to the people who come after us?

II  One group answers without hesitation. Dig, they say, because the ground is not the safe place it looks. Ploughs cut a little deeper into fields every season. Coasts erode, and the sites on them slide into the sea. Looters dig at night where nobody is watching, and sell what they find. A site destroyed before anyone records it does not become a mystery for the future. It simply disappears, and no one learns what it held.

III  The other side replies that a spade is not a neutral tool. A site is a stack of thin layers, and their order is the evidence; once they are lifted, that order survives only in the notes somebody happened to write. Methods also keep improving. The material earlier excavations threw onto the spoil heap, soil and seeds and animal bones, is what laboratories now read for diet, climate and trade. Whatever we open this year, we open with this year’s methods, and a site can only be excavated once.

IV  Students of archaeology meet this argument early, in three words that sound like a warning: "Excavation is destruction." The phrase is not aimed at careless digging. It says something harder: even a patient, expert excavation takes the site apart, and the only version left afterwards is the record the team makes, the notes, drawings and photographs. That is why an unpublished dig is treated as a failure. Yet the phrase cuts both ways, because ground that is quietly washing away is being destroyed too, and leaves no record at all.

V  Most archaeologists therefore treat excavation as a last resort rather than a first move, and the working rule is plain. Survey first, with instruments that read what lies under the surface without breaking it. Dig where the ground itself is disappearing, and open the smallest area that answers the question. Everywhere else, mark the site, protect it and write down exactly where it lies. A field that has been mapped and left alone is a promise kept to whoever digs there in a hundred years.

A quoted phrase

the ground is not safe
dig now · בעד
בעד חפירה: the ground is not the safe place it looks (פסקה II)
a site is dug only once
leave it · נגד
נגד חפירה: a site can only be excavated once (פסקה III)
Worked questions

1Why do some archaeologists say that the ground is not a safe place? (paragraph II)
  3. Because ploughs, erosion and looters are destroying sites anyway. ✓
2Complete the sentence: In paragraph III, once the layers of a site have been lifted, their order survives only in ______.
  2. בטקסט: that order survives only in the notes somebody happened to write.
  3. the notes that somebody happened to write during the dig. ✓
3What do the three words "Excavation is destruction." in paragraph IV mean? They mean:
  2. הטקסט קודם שולל פירוש אחד: not aimed at careless digging.
  4. Even an expert excavation takes the site apart, so the only version of it that survives is the record the team makes. ✓

Reading tips · Module G

כאן: One group בפסקה II מול The other side בפסקה III.
