Reading: The Memory That Rebuilds Itself

Topic or purpose? Work on the text Check

Work on the text you have just read. Decide whether each line states the topic or the purpose, choose the meaning from context, and in the last one type the purpose of the writer in one sentence.

Memory does not replay. It rebuilds.

The strategy

topic = what it is about · purpose = why it was written

מטרה נענית בפועל בשם הפועל, ותמיד יש בה מישהו שהכותב רוצה להשפיע עליו: to warn readers that..., to persuade courts to....

שאלת נושא ושאלת מטרה נראות דומות, והתשובות שלהן מנוסחות אחרת לגמרי: נושא בשם עצם, מטרה בשם פועל (to warn, to persuade, to recommend).
The text

The Memory That Rebuilds Itself

1

I · The comforting picture

Ask most people how memory works and they will reach for the language of recording. A memory, they assume, is filed away somewhere in the brain, complete and unchanged, waiting to be played back. It is a comforting picture, and it is wrong. Memory does not replay. It rebuilds. Every time you recall an ordinary afternoon, your brain assembles it again out of scattered fragments, and whatever it cannot find, it quietly supplies.

2

II · Reconstruction, not retrieval

Psychologists describe remembering as reconstruction rather than retrieval. The details of an event are not kept together in one drawer. They are spread across the systems that first handled them: the sounds in one place, the faces in another, the sense of where you were standing in a third. Recall gathers those pieces and stitches them into a story. The stitching is fast, effortless and invisible, and that is exactly the danger. We experience the finished product and never the assembly, so a memory that has been patched with guesswork feels no different from one that has not.

3

III · The question changes the answer

Worse, the act of remembering leaves a memory open to change. In a familiar kind of laboratory study, volunteers watch a short film of a traffic accident and answer questions about it. The wording of the questions shifts what they report: ask how fast the cars were going when they smashed into each other, rather than when they hit each other, and the estimates rise. Some viewers later remember broken glass that was never in the film at all. Nobody here is lying. The suggestion has been absorbed and refiled, and it now belongs to the person who watched.

4

IV · The witness in the courtroom

This matters far beyond the laboratory, because courts have long treated an eyewitness as something close to a recording device. A witness who points across the room and says she is certain is enormously persuasive to a jury, and juries are rarely told how such certainty is produced.

5

V · Where the certainty comes from

That certainty is produced by the same reconstructive machinery as the memory itself, and it can be inflated by everything that happened after the crime: a photograph seen in the news, an encouraging nod from an officer, the ordinary business of telling the story again and again. Each retelling makes the account smoother and more confident. It does not make it more accurate.

6

VI · Perishable evidence

None of this means that eyewitness evidence is worthless, and it would be reckless to claim so. It means the evidence is perishable, and it should be handled like anything else that spoils: the first account written down before other versions can reach the witness, identification procedures run by an officer who does not know which face belongs to the suspect, the level of confidence recorded at that first moment, not months later in a courtroom. These are dull, procedural reforms. They are also the only honest answer to a mind that rebuilds instead of replaying. Nobody is going to hand us better memories. We can only build better ways of collecting what our memories give us.

Worked questions

1What is the topic of the text?
  2. חוזרים: memory, remembering, recall, eyewitness. Memory does not replay. It rebuilds.
  3. The way human memory rebuilds events, and what that means for eyewitnesses. ✓
2Why does the writer describe the traffic-accident study (paragraph III)?
  3. To prove that a memory can absorb a false detail, so that the courtroom claim in the next paragraph is hard to dismiss. ✓
3What is the main purpose of the writer?
  2. יש: it is wrong, Worse, exactly the danger, reckless, the only honest answer.
  4. To warn readers that a confident witness can still be wrong, and to argue for changing how such evidence is collected. ✓

Remember

  • 3כותב שמוותר לצד השני (None of this means...)
