Dolphins

Dolphins live in the sea, but they are not fish. A fish stays under the water, but a dolphin must come up to the top for air. A mother dolphin feeds her baby with milk. Every few minutes a dolphin comes up to the top of the water. It takes air in through a small hole on its head, and then it goes down again.

Dolphins are very clever animals. They live together in groups, and in a group they help each other. When a dolphin is sick, the others push it up for air. Dolphins also talk with clicks and other sounds. Scientists think that every dolphin has its own sound, like a name.

Dolphins eat fish. They swim fast, and they jump high out of the water. Sometimes they follow boats and play in the waves. Dolphins also make sounds and then listen. The sound comes back to them from a fish, and in this way they find food in dark water.

Sadly, dolphins are in danger today. People put garbage and plastic into the sea, and the water gets dirty. Fishing nets are another problem. A dolphin can swim into a net, and then it cannot come up for air. Some countries now have rules about fishing nets and about clean water. We must protect the sea, because we want these animals to stay with us.
