The First Day

I stood at the door of my new classroom. My hands felt cold, and my heart was beating fast. Thirty people were already inside, and they were talking about a football match. I did not know anyone, and everyone else already had friends. I counted slowly to ten and walked in.

The morning was long. The teacher gave me a seat near the window and a book with someone else’s name in it. I copied everything from the board, but I did not put my hand up once. Twice I nearly said something, and twice I said nothing.

At lunchtime, I sat alone at the end of a long table. I looked at my sandwich, but I was not hungry. The other students were laughing in their groups, and the room was loud. I wished I was back at my old school, with Yoni and Tal.

Then a girl with a red bag sat down next to me. ‘Hi, I’m Dana,’ she said with a smile. ‘You’re new, right? Come and sit with us.’ I did not know what to say, so I just got up and followed her. Her friends made room for me.

By the end of that lunch break I was sitting with three new friends, and after school Dana showed me the short way to the gate. On the bus home, I smiled to myself. My old school was still my old school. But maybe this school was not so bad after all.
